Six locals attended volleyball referees course last weekend

Six volleyball officials were amongst 16 participants attending a national referee’s course in Antigua at the Heritage Hotel held from March 20 – 22. The course was organised by the Antigua & Barbuda Volleyball Association (ABAVA) with NORCECA and the East Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA). The six Antiguans were: Henry Matthew, Esron Giddens, Roy Lee, Vanessa Burke, Dvonte Andrew, and Collin Thomas.

The other participants came from other Caribbean islands. The course focused on the new International FIVB rules governing the sport. It was conducted by Mr. Brian Charles (FIVB) an International Certified referee from Trinidad & Tobago. The course formed part of the NORCECA development plan and was held in collaboration with FIVB to assist all national federations.

Each participant was awarded a certificate of participation,while those who passed the exam, will be later presented with a certified certificate of that success. The Hon. Colin James,Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and, President of the National Volleyball Association – Mr. Wilbur Harrigan(OBE) – addressed both the opening ceremony and closing proceedings. The ABVA will host the ECVA Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Tournament coming at the end of next month, April.
